Charlotte BI Group Presents Data Stories for Middle School Girls!

The Charlotte Business Intelligence (BI) Group has partnered with girls+data to bring Data Stories to the Charlotte area.  Homeschool girls in grades 6-8 will have an opportunity to attend a three-hour workshop that provides middle school girls with hands-on opportunities to think like data analytics professionals in STEM careers that don't code 100% of the time.   Girls+data presents these workshops nationwide.  Choose from 2 sessions, October 14, 2017.

Fourth Annual Fire Safety for Homeschool Students!

Every year, the Harrisburg, NC Fire Department presents a FREE program for to educate homeschool students about fire and life safety.  The firefighters themselves will be demonstrating the fire truck, equipment, and gear they use every day to protect the Harrisburg community. In addition, there will be a smoke simulation trailer on-scene where the students will learn to recognize the sound of a smoke detector and learn to react appropriately in order to exit a smoky structure quickly and safely. Don't let your child miss out on the exciting, fun, learning experience that will serve as a foundation for life-long fire safety practices. This special program is hosted by the Harrisburg Fire Department at absolutely no cost to you.

Free Dyslexia Resources for Homeschoolers!

We're always on the lookout for resources to share with our home educating community in the greater Charlotte, NC area.  This one is a real find.  We stopped counting at 50 resources, all of which are FREE!

TEAACH T-STEP Program logo

Program for Homeschool Adolescents and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders

 

The Charlotte TEACCH Center is excited to partner with Central Piedmont Community College to offer the 12-week T-STEP program for students ages 16-21, with autism spectrum disorder.

During this 12-week program, students will have the opportunity to learn about organization and executive function skills, emotion regulation skills, and social skills to increase their success at the college level. An additional internship component allows students to practice the skills they have learned with the support of internship related counseling. Further supports are also offered through higher education counseling, career counseling, and self-advocacy counseling.

Several spots remain for the fall course that begins September 12, 2017!

Hurricane Harvey:  How You Can Help

 

By now you've seen the photos of the disaster happening in Houston, TX and surrounding areas as a result of Hurricane Harvey.  Homes flooded, cars submerged, nursing home residents stranded in waist deep water, neighbors and rescue groups evacuating people and pets.  Most of us are trying to figure out how we can help.  We put ourselves in the shoes of someone who has lost everything and we try to figure out what they might need.  Before doing anything, take a deep breath and a moment to learn about how you can really help.

Are you thinking about a family adventure to a national park this year?  Thanks to the Every Kid in a Park program from the Department of the Interior, any family with a U.S. fourth grade student (or homeschool equivalent) can get free admission to national parks.  What is even better is that the Pass covers family and friends too!

Educator's Days at Barnes & Noble

Homeschoolers:  Receive 25% Educator's Discount at Barnes & Noble on Weekends in August!

 

If you don't already have one, you'll want to get your Barnes & Noble Educator's Discount Card.  Homeschoolers who have a Barnes & Noble Educator's Discount Card receive a 20% discount off of many items throughout the year.  However, during weekends in August, that discount goes up to 25%.  August weekends are part of a special promotion program to provide educators with an additional 5% savings.

Did you know that there's a National Honor Society for homeschool students?  The Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Eta Sigma Alpha (ZENHS) serves homeschool students in the greater Charlotte area and will hold its Kickoff Meeting this week!  This is a good opportunity for you and your student(s) to get to know more about what being a part of ZENHS looks like.  We'd love to meet you!

Registration is open NOW for a homeschool only driver education class for Mecklenburg County students.  Note this class is open ONLY to Mecklenburg County homeschool residents.  Class dates are Monday, August 28th through Friday, September 1, 2017.  Class minimum is 30 students, maximum is 35 students.
