Homeschool Field Trip:  Old Salem and Candle Tea

NCHE (North Carolinians for Home Education) invites ALL homeschoolers to join them for a homeschool field trip to Old Salem Museums and Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC, on Tuesday, December 5, 2017.

Located at 600 S. Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 (Map) and designated as a National Historic Landmark, Old Salem Historic District showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries.  Exhibits include communal buildings, churches, gardens, houses, and shops.  On any given day, visitors have the opportunity to witness historic trades performed by talented craftsmen, actively participate in hands-on activities that recreate Moravian crafts, and glimpse into the everyday life of Moravians by experiencing the domestic skills they honed.

NOTE:  This is homeschool field trip consists of two parts.  Participants may choose to attend both the Candle Tea portion AND the Old Salem Footsteps Through History tour OR just one of these.  Please note registration deadline for Footsteps Through History is November 3.  Candle Tea tickets will continue to be sold while supply lasts.

Old Salem Footsteps Through History

The Footsteps Through History tour is a self-guided town visit and includes admission to the doctor's house and medical museum, the potter's shop, the joinery (furniture making) and other town buildings and gardens.   It also includes an educational video on the history of Old Salem at the Visitors Center and admission to three self-guided galleries in the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) that feature ceramics, textiles, and furniture.

Candle Tea Tour

Hosted by the Home Moravian Church of Winston-Salem, the Candle Tea is a Christmas tradition.  This abbreviated tour includes a tour of the Single Brothers house with a special emphasis on the kitchen, candlemaking, the Nativity story, the Moravian putz ( a miniature replica of Old Salem), and a Moravian sugar cookie.

Tours are scheduled for a specific morning time.  There are five morning times available between 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.  Two of those times are already full!  Group size is strictly limited due to fire codes.  If you want to be with your friends, please have one person order all the tickets for your group. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated.  Every effort will be made to give you your preferred time.
